An architect, Waziri Bulama, on Monday took the oath of office as the new acting National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pending the ratification of his office as the substantive National Secretary by the National Convention of the party.
He takes over from Victor Giadom, the Deputy National Secretary, who has been acting in the office of the National Secretary.
His inauguration, which took place at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, was supervised by the party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, with the governors of Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum and his Gombe State counterpart, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa, in attendance.
Also in attendance were other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
Comrade Oshiomhole said: “The party had meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, governor of Yobe and also consulted other stakeholders of the party where they came to a conclusion that Waziri Bulama should be admitted as the acting National Secretary of the party pending the ratification by the National Convention.”
The new national secretary promised to work with every organ of the party and other party executives to retain its position as the ruling party.
He assured party faithful of fairness, saying he has no agenda of his own.
Bulama, who hailed the contributions of the founding fathers of the APC and commended the current NWC for the achievements the party has recorded so far, promised to do everything possible to bring about the needed unity in the party.
Addressing reporters after the inauguration, Governor Inuwa expressed confidence in the appointment of the new national secretary, saying he will add value to the leadership of the party.
Inuwa, who said he has known Bulama for more than 40 years, noted: “I am very happy that it ended this way. It took some time for us to have this replacement, but what is more important is that at the end of the day, we are able to come to a resolution and the new national secretary has been sworn in today.
“We hope he will work with other leaders and consolidate on the gains of the party. I have known Architect Buluma in the last 40 years. I know that he is a person of impeccable character, a person that you can vouch for, he is very hardworking. He knows what to do. In fact, he has already started doing that trying to work and carry everybody along so that APC will deliver on its mandate and that is what he is going to do.”
Bulama, who would have been inaugurated as the National Secretary since March, had his appointment opposed by a section of the party from his geo-political zone led by the National Vice Chairman from the Northeast, Mustapha Salihu.
However, the inauguration was almost marred, as the Northeast Vice Chairman, Comrade Mustapha, who was also in attendance, demanded the stoppage of the inauguration and requested the National Chairman of the party to ask reporters to leave the hall for a five- minute meeting. The meeting, however, lasted more than 30 minutes before media coverage of the ceremony was allowed.
